City of Cleveland Announces Big City Boo 2013

On Thursday, October 31 from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM, the City of Cleveland will host “Big City Boo” in the City’s 22 recreational centers. This annual event provides a safe alternative to trick-or treating for Cleveland’s children. Parents, guardians and caregivers can take their children, 12 and under, to the City’s recreation centers for games, contests and other family friendly activities plus Halloween treats. Residents can contact their neighborhood recreation centers for more information. All of these events are free and open to the public.

Those who choose to collect candy in their neighborhoods on October 31st should do so during the designated time of 6 PM – 8 PM.

Listed below are recommendations for a safe Halloween:

• Adults should accompany young children – older children should travel in groups.

• Children should wear light colored clothing short enough to prevent tripping.

• Add reflective tape to increase visibility.

• Make sure children can see through their masks or use make-up.

• Avoid hard plastic or wooden props such as daggers or swords – instead use foam or other soft

and flexible materials.

• Carry and use a flashlight after dark.

• Visit homes within your own neighborhood – homes that you know with lights on.

• Never go into deserted buildings or isolated areas.

• Avoid shortcuts through empty parks, fields, or alleys.

• Be alert for vehicle traffic; never approach a parked car; move away from a car that pulls up

next to you.

• If someone is following you, go quickly to the nearest occupied public place (mall, store,

recreation center, gas station, fire station etc.) and scream for help.

• Only give and accept wrapped or packaged candy.

• Parents should examine all candy before allowing children to eat it and report anything

suspicious to the police.

• Keep costumed children away from pets who may become frightened.

When haunted houses became all the rage during the 1970s, the modern-day concept of Halloween was still very much in its infancy. It was a simpler time: kids used pillowcases for collected candy, nickels and loot.
And if you didn't have a deluxe (read: expensive) costume, you made due with a makeshift one dug out from an old closet or trunk. Throw on a little of Mom's make-up and voila! -- instant holiday fun.
To wit, haunted houses were mostly very similar -- lo-tech affairs -- and if there were black lights and canned sound effects involved, it was considered above average.
That's when places like Akron's Haunted Schoolhouse and Laboratory and the Hudson Haunted House staked early claim to what has become a state-of-the-art phenomenon -- the haunted "events" of today blend all the drama and tension of Hollywood horror flicks with video game pathos and the grandeur of DIY work ethics (and mad theatrical creativity) gone wild.
Today, there aren't just haunted houses with your average creepers and quick scares. There are haunted forests and schoolhouses and zombie battlefields and paintball. And that's just scratching the surface. There are fire-breathing dragons and laser light shows and... well... and *clowns*.
Yep, that's right. Clowns.
You'll find all of this and more in our rundown of Northeast Ohio's premier haunted attractions. And hey, if you scare easily, consider tossing a change of undies in your car before you go to some of these must-do Halloween traditions.
Because you'll need 'em.

Aim, focus and take your best shot during Photo Safari at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The Zoo's annual photo contest is open to all amateur photographers.

Participation in Photo Safari is easy. All photos must be taken on Zoo grounds between April 1 and November 1, 2013 and submitted to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on photographic paper on or before November 1, 2013.

Photo Safari photographers will find special "photo opportunity" signs located throughout the Zoo. These signs are placed near key exhibit viewing areas to help inspire participants to take their best shot.
